Lycian Photography Holidays
Based in the western part of ancient Lycia, around modern Fethiye, this area has an incredible wealth of natural and man-made locations. Bounded by the sea on one side and the Taurus mountains on the other, this part of Anatolia not only has breathtaking landscapes and picturesque villages, but also some very interesting surprises including the bay of Göcek, Öludeniz, Akdağ, nomads, traditional villages and ancient Lycian sites.
DATES: 20 – 26 May 2007
24 – 30 June 2007

WHO CAN TAKE PART?
Anyone wanting to pursue an interest in photography: from beginners to those with experience who may simply wish to add to their collection of photographs. There are subjects for everyone from the ancient Lycian sites, natural landscape, Turkish flora and fauna (for which this is an extremely rich area), the beautiful coastline……….
At the same time we welcome anyone with a spirit of adventure who wants to get to know Fethiye and its environs.
When not out taking photographs there will be time for lying on the beach, swimming in the sea, taking part in various craft workshops and, for people wanting to relax, there are hammocks on the beach, sun-beds in the garden and shaded ‘kiosks’ on the riverbank.
You can even get up early and watch the sun rise as you float in the calm sea.
For these photography holidays to take place we need a group of minimum 5 – maximum 15 people.
PROGRAMME
Photographer Faruk Akbaş will be the guide for the programme. It will start on a Sunday when all participants will meet in Fethiye, and end on the following Saturday.
Sunday
An initial meeting to give all participants the opportunity to get to know each other and ask questions about the programme. Individuals will also be able to state their particular interests in terms of photography, and there will be a short, local excursion.
Monday
A visit to the cool waters of Saklikent Gorge with its fascinating display of light and shade. Then to the ancient Lycian capital of Xanthos where the focus will be on composition. In the afternoon we go to Turkey’s longest beach at Patara – a chance to swim and sunbathe. Finally sunset at Patara from the sand dunes, an opportunity to capture graphic images.
Tuesday
A day on the beach when not working on computer image manipulation, for which training will be given if needed. In the evening try taking photographs by the light of a bonfire on the beach.
Wednesday
A walk through the abandoned village of Kayaköy with its churches, chapels and derelict stone houses; we will continue walking over the hill and down into Öludeniz with opportunities for panoramic landscape photography en route.
Anyone wishing to do so can paraglide from Babadağ, taking photographs of the setting sun on the way down.
Thursday
A session on how to take successful photographs of wildlife and portraits using natural light, artificial light and indirect lighting.
Friday
A boat trip that will visit a local lighthouse, islands and coves giving ample opportunity for realistic photographs and abstract compositions.
Saturday
A final training session on macro and panning techniques.
Possible additional excursion:
Akdağ: to visit Yörük nomads living in their black goat-hair tents and climb to the summit of the 3000 metre peak.
To achieve this in one day means a very early start and then a three-hour drive to the high pastures at 2200 metres. Anyone not wishing to climb to the summit will spend the day on these pastures, where the nomads camp, and where there are many photographic opportunities. The trek to the summit takes 3 – 4 hours.
Apart from people with health problems, anyone can make the trek to the summit.
If the group wishes to make this excursion there will be an extra charge.
