Developing the skills he”s acquired in his 40 years of experience marble-cutting, a profession he learned in his father”s workshop, 51-year-old Dursun Köroğlu from Selçuk in İzmir continues his work in the hope that some day the value of his art will be recognized.
Saying that people can”t hide surprise when they see his extraordinary work on washbasins, tables, statuettes and various other pieces that bring together different designs in colourful festivity, Köroğlu complained that his work is not sufficiently known by art-lovers.
Köroğlu, a father of two who came to İzmir”s city of Selçuk and opened his own workshop in 1980, said he is only able to continue his work due to his engagement with the construction sector, but despite everything still spares time for his artwork. “Giving shape to stone with my own hands always gives me pleasure,” said Köroğlu. Merging his interest in painting with stone-cutting, Köroğlu has succeeded in producing paintings using sieve and in this way acquires marble particles of different colors and sizes, which he uses instead of colours.
Complaining that he hadn”t been able to set up exhibits to present his pieces -- produced after long months of work -- to people who appreciate art, Köroğlu said that Atatürk, Hacı Bektaş, the Virgin Mary, the ancient city of Ephesus and Marilyn Monroe are among his pieces. The artist said he needs an additional three months to complete his current work on Sultanahmet and the Haghia Sophia.
