The Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry has begun a series of large-scale projects to renew its museums, historical sites and ruins in an effort to draw more visitors, ministry officials said on Tuesday.
The Cultural Heritage and Museums General Directorate plans to launch projects to renew and restore several cultural and historical places, including castles, churches, monasteries, madrasahs (schools) and ramparts in various provinces in almost every part of Turkey.
Ministry officials said several Turkish museums will also be renovated as part of these projects.
Archaeological and ethnographic museums in several provinces famous for their historical wealth such as Antalya, Aydın, Balıkesir, Çorum, Hatay, Konya and Kayseri were included in the ministry”s projects.
The ministry also plans to restore several Turkish historical buildings abroad. Restoration on four mosques in Bulgaria, Macedonia and Georgia, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk”s house in Greece”s Thessaloniki region, a tomb in Romania, Turkish monuments in Mongolia and a madrasah-Turkish bath complex in Georgia will be completed by 2010, ministry officials said.
