Efes Airport in İzmir”s Selçuk District has become a favorite spot for adrenalin addicts. The Turkey Parachute Championship that kicked off yesterday is at the airport.
Interest in parachute courses at Selçuk Efes Airport has grown in the recent years. Türk Kuşu parachute school manager Serdar Uyanık said that this year between Sept.14 and 18 the championship would be held in three different branches.
“We had parachute schools in Ankara and Eskişehir for 35 years," he said. "In 1997, World Air Games took place in Ephesus for the first time. We opened the school last year.” Nine courses each trained 20 parachuters.
He also said that 30 percent of people who participate are women. “They became candidates for the parachute national team. For the Turkey Championship to be held next week, we will form the national team."
More than 100 sportsmen are to participate in the championship. Fifteen referees and four jury members will officiate. “The competitors consist of parachute school trainees, Turkish Armed Forces parachutist and amateur parachutists. The Syria Parachute Team will also participate. The first eight will form the Turkish National Parachute Team,” said Uyanık.
