By organizing a henna night, a Turkish woman and her Spanish finance gave a decidedly Turkish flavour to the first step in their marriage, which will take place later this month in Spain.
Meltem Mazmanoğlu, 29, and her future husband, 31-year old Spaniard David Costa Faidella, met while in London, where Meltem was studying English after graduating from Marmara University’s Finance Faculty. Her friendship with computer engineer David soon blossomed into love, reported the Anatolia news agency.
Noting that with her family’s consent, they have decided to hold ceremonies in both Turkey and Spain, Meltem said, “We have decided to organize henna night in Hatay so David and his family can see Turkish traditions. We hosted David’s mother, Faidella Munill, and his brother, Jordi Costa Faidella, with the best of Turkish hospitality. The two families had time to get to know each other.” David watched henna being painted on the hands of attendees of the ceremony, held at a restaurant in Harbiye district. He was given jewelry in accordance with Turkish custom and later joined in Turkish traditional dances as well. Explaining they would return to England after the wedding ceremony in Spain, Meltem said, “After David graduates we will settle in İstanbul, because my fiancé loves Turkey. He has already started learning Turkish and I will start learning Spanish.”
Saying that he proposed to Meltem when he realized his feelings for her had turned into love, David remarked: “I love the Turkish people. I have great respect for their traditions and customs. I have been greatly impressed by their culture.”
