A 200-year-old windmill in the Kızlanaltı district of the Aegean town of Datça has been restored and turned into a cafe. The windmill, which has been rented to a private citizen, Zeynep Kurtulmaz, by the Special Provincial Administration, will also be used for tourist visits. It is one of six windmills built in the early 1800s and grinding cereals into the 1970s that were restored in 2007 on the initiative of Muğla Special Provincial Administration.
In May, the administration offered the biggest of the six windmills for rent. It went to 32-year-old Kurtulmaz, a business manager, who signed a lease through 2016. She completed the inner and exterior refurbishment of the 150-square-meter, three-story windmill before the end of July.
The windmill, now named ’Zeynep Café,” started serving a short time ago. Kurtulmaz, who is also a professional cook, said the cafe would prepare foods using the flour they ground in the windmill. She said the mill was open to everyone. ’The windmill, which serves in its original capacities, is expected to contribute to tourism.”
