The fault starting from the Greek island of Crete and reaching çameli over Rhodes and Fethiye has been rather active for the past few months. The activities have mobilized the scientific community as well.
Our city has experienced quite a few minor quakes in the past few years, but nothing major has been reported so far. But Fethiye is one of the first risk areas as far as earthquakes are concerned. As well known, it is still not possible to predict earthquakes with any great accuracy. However, the research being carried out by scientists will guide authorities in the precautions that need to be taken, therefore full support is given to the projects. A while ago, the city Council of Fethiye had hosted a team of scientists who carried out a series of studies in our region. The results of those studies have not been published yet. However, our city is hosting a new team formed in partnership with Greece. The scientists will again carry out a series of studies within the scope of the project, supported by Tübitak. The team, made up of scientists from the universities of Süleyman Demirel and Tessaloniki, include Prof. Dr Supyos Pavliden, Dr. Alex Audios Calapsipetros, Anastasia Michailidoy, Prof. Dr Nevzat Özgür, Prof. Dr Zübeyir Kamacı, Prof. Dr Murat Şentürk and Prof. Dr Fuzuli Yağmurlu. The scientists visited Fethiye Mayor Behçet Saatçi at his offices and asked for support. The earthquake risk of the city and the studies to be carried out were discussed at the meeting. Mayor Behçet Saatçi promised full support for the studies.
