The “Caretta Caretta” sea turtles have started laying their eggs along the Fethiye-çalış beach. Security measures along the çalış coast have also been increased. In some places on the beach, wire cages are being put up to protect the eggs. Officials, complaining that although it is forbidden to light fires or make noise during the night, so that the turtles can safely come ashore to lay their eggs, citizens and holidaymakers don”t pay much attention to these rules, say, “Especially during hatching the place must be dark and quiet so that the hatchlings can reach the sea safely and without fear.” The Caretta Carettas have a life span of 70 to 100 years, and spend approximately 70 years of their lives travelling the seas. The Carettas, able to procreate only in a few certain places in the world, choose fine sandy beaches to lay their eggs. A protection, observation and information center for the Carettas, laying their eggs on only 20 beaches in the Mediterranean basin, was established in 2006. The volunteer students of the center work in harmony to protect the species.
