The autopsied head of Huriye Arıcı, who died in a traffic accident in Milas 28 years ago, was found in the archives of the Courthouse.
Mutlu The bones of Huriye Arıcı who died in 1977 in a traffic accident, were sent for autopsy 3 years after her death by consent of court when the suspicion arose that her death could have been a murder. After the bones and skull were tested at the Istanbul Institution of Forensic Medicine, they were sent back to the 1st Criminal Court of Milas. The bones were forgotten in the archives in the cellar of the Milas Courthouse. Arıcı family, learning about the incident from newsmen, reclaimed the head and buried it with the body.
After the death in 1977 of Huriye Arıcı, living at the village of Menteş, the cause of death was found suspicious and the case taken to court. 1st Criminal Court of Milas ruled for an exhumation and autopsy. The body was exhumed in 1980 and the bones sent to the Istanbul Institution of Forensic Medicine for examination. The skull, neck and backbones were examined and sent back to the 1st Criminal Court of Milas.
During restoration work at the courthouse, workers saw the severed head and informed the authorities. Investigation revealed that the head belonged to Huriye Arıcı.
BURIAL OF THE SKULL
Huriye Arıcı’s son, 71 year old Hüseyin Arıcı, applied to the Prosecutor’s Office for the return of the skull. The Prosecutor’s Office returned the bones a few days ago. Hüseyin Arıcı revealed that at the time, his father handled the autopsy and court procedures, and said, ’We thought the bones had been placed in the grave. It was a shock to learn that they were not. It has freshened our sense of loss.”
Arıcı’s grave was opened in the presence of Menteş Village Headman, İbrahim Evdaş and the villagers. The bones were finally laid to rest, and the grave covered again.
